A Twin Block is a functional orthodontic appliance consisting of two separate removable blocks (upper and lower) with interlocking inclined planes. When the jaw closes, the blocks guide the lower jaw forward, stimulating jaw growth and correcting bite problems in growing children.

Twin Block treatment works best during active growth, typically between ages 8-14 for most children. The ideal time is during the pubertal growth spurt when jaw growth potential is highest. Earlier intervention often yields more predictable results as it harnesses natural growth.

Active Twin Block treatment usually takes 9-15 months, followed by a retention phase of 6-12 months. After the jaw relationship is corrected, many patients need additional orthodontic treatment (braces or aligners) to align individual teeth, adding another 12-24 months.

For optimal results, the Twin Block should be worn 24 hours a day, including during meals and sleep. It's only removed briefly for brushing, flossing, and cleaning the appliance. Consistent wear is essential for successful jaw correction.

The cost of Twin Block treatment depends on your child's case, and braces afterward, if needed, are priced separately. Ask us for a quote. Many dental insurance plans provide orthodontic coverage for children, and we offer payment plans.

Twin Block appliances primarily correct Class II malocclusions where the lower jaw is positioned too far back (retrognathic). This includes overbites, receding chins, and jaw discrepancies. By repositioning the lower jaw forward during growth, it creates a more balanced bite and facial profile.

There's an adjustment period of 1-2 weeks where speaking and eating feel different. Most children adapt quickly. The appliance may cause some initial jaw muscle fatigue as muscles adapt to the new position. Any discomfort typically resolves within the first few weeks.
